Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi[8] was born in 2 March 1869[1] in Porbandar, a coastal village which was in that case part of the Bombay Presidency,  British India.[9] He was created in his our ancestors home, at this point known as Kirti Mandir.[10] His daddy, Karamchand Gandhi (1822–1885), whom belonged to the HinduModh community, served because the diwan (a substantial official) of Porbander state, a small princely state in theKathiawar Agency of British India.[10][11] His grandfather was Uttamchand Gandhi, also called Utta Gandhi.[10] His mother, Putlibai, who came from the Pranami Vaishnava community, was Karamchand's fourth wife, the first three spouses having obviously died in childbirth.[12] Jain ideas and practices strongly influenced Gandhi particularly through his mom who was a devout Jain.[13][14] The Indian classics, especially the tales of Shravana and king Harishchandra, had a great impact on Gandhi in his childhood. In his life, he confesses that they still left an marked impression in the mind. He writes: " It haunted me and I must have served Harishchandra to myself times without quantity. " Gandhi's early self-identification with truth and appreciate as substantial values is usually traceable to these epic heroes.[15][16]

In-may 1883, the 13-year-old Mohandas was wedded to 14-year-old Kasturbai Makhanji (her 1st name was usually reduced to " Kasturba", and affectionately to " Ba" ) in an arranged child marital life, according to the custom of the region.[17] In the process, he lost 12 months at university.[18] Recalling the day they got married, he when said, " As we did not know much about matrimony, for us it meant just wearing fresh clothes, eating sweets and playing with family members. " Yet , as was prevailing traditions, the adolescent bride was to spend much time at her parents' home, and away from her husband.[19]In 1885, when Gandhi was 15, the couple's initial child was born, but made it through only a few days. Gandhi's dad, Karamchand Gandhi, had also died previous that 12 months.[20]
