Operant Conditioning

In a world that was dominated by psychoanalytic studies, and Thorndike's challenge box to describe behaviorism, M. F. Skinner was a groundbreaking in the world of mindset. His research and reviews on operant conditioning have not only survived ridicule and skepticism in the time nevertheless has also made it through the passing of time and social development to incorporate his theories many decades afterwards. By learning from and growing upon Skinner's schedule of reinforcement the field of social and academic learning has evolved coming from a perplexing act to a learned method that could be comprehended the world over.

During his study Skinner created a theory to modify behavior believing that behavior can be created due to a positive or negative stimulus or environment, instead of just instinctually responding to stimuli, like scratch an itch. While this individual did not create the foundation of behavior changes, his exploration allowed him to increase upon already existing theories produced by Pavlov and Thorndike. Skinner's theory contains two types of behavior, surveys takers and operant behavior (Olsen & Hergerhahn, 2009). To go along with, and help alter unwanted patterns Skinner designed two types of conditioning. Type S also called respondent health and Type R also called operant conditioning. Type H conditioning is the equivalent to typical conditioning since described by Pavlov and focuses primarily on the importance of the stimulus creating a preferred response or behavior (Olsen & Hergerhahn, 2009). Whereas type L conditioning is similar to Thorndike's instrumental conditioning, by simply focusing upon the response after the government (Olsen & Hergerhahn, 2009).
